About Us
LaVerne MonetteÂ
Oahas' First Executive DirectorÂ
She was a Two-Spirit leader, activist, lawyer, and a significant figure in Indigenous harm reduction, who worked at 2-Spirited People of the 1st Nations in the early years, while spearheading the development of the Ontario Aboriginal HIV/AIDS Strategy (Oahas).Â
Â
-
To educate the aboriginal public about the causes and effects of, and treatments for, HIV/AIDS by offering workshops, seminars, conferences and meetings and by collecting and disseminating information on that topic.
-
To offer counselling and referrals to aboriginal persons in coping with the effects of HIV/AIDS.Â
Under LV's leadership, the organization approached this work by centering Indigenous ways of knowing, being, doing, through providing connection to community and culture.Â
Where We Are Today
Vision
Rooted in the leadership and wisdom of Indigenous People Living with HIV, Oahas envisions a future beyond HIV and STBBI transmission and stigma — a future abundant in the rights, ceremonies, and knowledges of Indigenous peoples.
Â
Mission
We walk alongside Indigenous people and communities impacted by HIV, STBBI, and harmful drug policies by offering low-barrier services, and advocating for systems change. Guided by Indigenous harm reduction principles, we provide lifesaving and necessary services including space for culture, connection, and belonging
Oahas Position Statements
Our position statements are shared as open letters - grounded in community voices, evidence, and lived experience - to advocate for equity, dignity, and meaningful change on the issues that matter most.
